Laser Therapy

Non-invasive pain relief and healing

Laser therapy is a powerful example of how Best Friends Animal Hospital and Pet Resources utilizes cutting-edge technology and skilled care to provide next-level benefits for pets.

What is laser therapy for pets?

Laser therapy (also known as photobiomodulation) involves applying a specific wavelength and intensity of light—far beyond the visible range—to a specific body area. At this wavelength, the light stimulates and accelerates normal cellular activity, including blood flow, waste product removal, and repair.

As a result, pets experience powerful health benefits such as:

  • Faster tissue healing
  • Decreased inflammation
  • Reduced pain

What conditions benefit from laser therapy?

Laser therapy is effective for various conditions and injuries, with new applications being discovered all the time. Our most commonly treated conditions include:

  • Arthritis
  • Wounds
  • Post-operative joints
  • Feline stomatitis
  • Ligament or tendon injury
  • Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD)
  • Certain skin conditions
  • Nerve injuries

In many cases, laser therapy is most effective when combined with other therapies such as medication and rehabilitation.

What to expect: Your pet’s laser therapy session

At Best Friends Animal Hospital and Pet Resources, we love laser therapy for its non-invasive, pet-friendly application, rapid benefits, and convenience.

  • Scheduling — Laser therapy sessions are generally scheduled as outpatient technician appointments. Depending on your pet’s condition and the number of areas treated, appointments may take only minutes or last up to half an hour.
  • Frequency — For best results, laser therapy usually starts with several sessions per week, then tapers to weekly, bi-weekly, and monthly treatments.
  • Ease of experience — Pets can lie down, sit, or stand during their session. During treatment, the laser handpiece is held over the target area and moved in a slow, controlled pattern. Pets experience only a gentle, comforting warmth, similar to a sunny day. While the laser is very safe when used properly, pets, pet parents, and staff are required to wear eye protection during treatment.
  • Results — While some pets may experience rapid relief, others may not show visible improvement for days or weeks. We recommend completing the entire recommended program to ensure your pet receives the full benefits of laser therapy.
  • Side effects — Laser therapy is very safe for pets. When used by a properly trained professional under appropriate conditions, it is not associated with side effects or complications.
